Title: Exoticse Choptop Build
Post by: exoticse on April 29, 2008, 11:50:24 PM
This build will chronicle the development of my 1985 Pontiac SE choptop.

History:

I first became a fan of fieros in high school (1984), when i saw a famous classmate and teammate of mine
mine (pic later) tooling around town in one that i believe belonged to a girlfriend of his ?

At any rate i decided at that point, when i could afford to get one someday, that i definatly wanted one !
Fast forward to 1988 after graduating college i decided to get one !

I picked up a used Black 1986 coupe 2M4 and drove the heck out of it ! I loved this little car and amazingly it really gave me no trouble at all !

Fast Forward

In 1999 i moved to florida and had to leave my little coupe behind at my parents home, in Ohio, as i had purchased a new car and could not drive both down at the same time.

Years later the fiero bug was still burning in me and i had decided that i was going to build a Diablo replica on a fiero chassis and was formulating plans when i ran across this one day while surfing the interenet.

Madcurl's silver choptop aka #11 changed everything for me ! A fiero with the exotic looks of a supercar at a fraction of the cost of a fake lamborghini, i was hooked and had to have one !

In October of 2005, i picked up a choptop from a super guy in Michigan by the name of Dan Johnson (aka Choptop on Pennocks). Dan had the car chopped by Archie in 1999,  but for various reasons he did not drive it much or get much done to it.

At one point he took off the panels to get it painted, but never got around to it and the car just sat and sat in his garage.

Eventually i was able to convice him to sell me the car (Thanks again Dan !) and my dream was taking off !
The first step was to get the panels back on the car in order to transport it.

In Jan, 2006 the guys from the Michigan Fiero club helped me out BIG TIME by hosting a panel party and putting the car back together for me (THANKS AGAIN GUYS !)

Meanwhile another Pennocks member, Steve White aka FieroMojo, stored the car for me and helped install some new brakes, while i reloaded my wallet for more improvements slated to occur at V-8 Archie's shop, in Illinios:

After many months of delays i was finally able to get the car shipped to Archie's and was armed and ready to really take off on this project. Well as we all know life does not always like to cooperate with our plans and schedules.

A totally unexpected divorce knocked me for a loop mentally, and financially and the project was put indefinatly on hold and began to collect dust at Archie's shop while i picked myself up and began to piece my life back together.

A HUGE THANKS to Archie for his patience and understanding while i regrouped and took care of these serious issues.

More to come !

Driven ?? You mean people actually drive these things ??

I was just having fun playing build up with it, sort of like a giant model toy.

You mean you expect me to actually drive it ?!!?   :o

But it's already falling apart.  That front end has so many modifications what else is going to so to be a weakness?  Now I'm not saying the builder did crap work, execution of the mods was fine.  It's just damn hard to attach to a finished fiberglass piece.

[Sorry I placed this in the wrong thread]

 :D

What types of things should i do to shake this car down whenever i get it home ??

Archie doesn't really work on stock engines so not really an option there. He mentioned there was oil in the plugs and they (front ones) had to be cleaned (were nasty) in order to get the car to fire up. He recommended i do the back ones as well, but mentioned they were a PIA.

The car has obviously not been run very much over the past couple of years and even when it was the property of the previous owner, he did not use it much so it pretty much just sat in his garage 90% of the time.

What types of checklist should i do to get it back into very good mechanical condition ?

Archie also mentioned the brakes were a bit sketchy ? Could this be due to rust ?

From reading  your post on PFF  I think you are having several issues that will have to be addressed sooner than later  and will try to give you some salutions:

(1)Oil in the plug holes : worn valve stem  seals  or valve guides ( head jobs  or replace heads) replacing seals is a band aid on a sore.

(2) Brakes issues: With the car in the snow belt  amd salty roads in winter  I would replace all lines especially the rubber one's,drain and blow out the hard lines and as for the master cylinder I would check it out  for muck I have a almost new(4 days use ) one you can have for shipping better safe than sorry.

Cut  the rotors at Discount Auto for trueness likewise  calipers to make sure they are not binding if not rebuild or get new one's.

"What types of things should i do to shake this car down whenever i get it home ?? "

Tony
If it was my car  I will go through everything on the car.

Cooling system:
Flush cooling system,
check and inspect all hoses and replace as needed,
replace thermostat
check operation of cooling fan.

Fuel system
replace fuel filter
check and inspect fuel lines
this might seem over the top, but I would take down the fuel tank and inspect the inside, you might have a lot of junk in there from the car sitting for a long time.

check and inspect belt, I would probably just replace them

Braking system
check and inspect everthing and replace as needed

Suspension
check and inspect everything and align car
pay attention to the shocks and struts.

Engine
I would do a complete tune up
plug, plug wires, spark plugs, distributor cap and rotor
inspect all the vacum lines

this are some of the things that I could think of now

The car arrived via a 72 foot double decker transport truck that had at least 4 other cars on it.
AM/PM car carriers out of illinios, did the transport at an EXTREMELY reasonable price !

They are the same guys that transported Dave's GT up to chicago to Archie's shop. They come down to Florida at least once a week.

oooooooook Chuck to the rescue !!

As i try to get #4 as mechanically sound as possible i also need to fix up some cosmetic misses.

A lot of things i plan to buy brand new, but the mechanicals come first, so in the meantime i will suffice with some used cosmetic parts to keep it looking good till i am ready to attack the outside.

Chuck has a  parts GT that he graciously is giving me the GT wheel well liners, the nose badge, and drip rails that my car is missing. Chuck whenever you get the chance, no rush.

I am also in need of both front marker lights with the round GT molding if anyone has any extras lying around or have seen in the junkyard.

Like i said i eventually plan to buy almost all new stuff, but it will be like anything else as money permits.
Thanks again Chuck !

Spent most of the day today, with Mike (Blacktree) troubleshooting issues on #4.

It always good to have another set of eyes and an experienced hand on board when tackling a project.
The first issue we addressed, or tried to, was the brakes.

Having not driven a fiero in several years, I had seemingly noticed the brake pedal to be a bit soft,..Archie had mentioned this too, so i asked mike to lend his perspective and experience.

Sure enough he agreed, things were way too soft. We inspected the master cylinder and decided to try and bleed the brakes.

Upon doing so, we clearly found there to be air in the lines and noticed a slight improvement in the pedal pressure, but still definatly not good enough.

Next we inspected the emergency brake because as we understood it, that being out of alignment can sometimes result in the mushy pedal. Upon inspection we found that the driver side e brake cable was rusted/broken and not connected, and the passenger side rear was ok, but not connected.

Mike and i disconected the lever/arm on the caliper associated with the e-brake hoping this might help, but to no avail. That is where we hit a roadblock and am trying to figure out what could be the problem.

Mike was big help and his fiero mechanical knowledge far surpassed mine, and it was a pleasure learning from someone with his experience. Mike felt the engine started and ran fine.

There several cosmetic and functional things he was able to point out that i had either missed or had not considered. All in all it was a great time, just frustraing that we were not able to solve the brake issue at the moment.

Any thoughts on the possible brake issue ? How can you tell if the master cylinder is bad ??

Title: Re: Exoticse Choptop Build
Post by: Blacktree on February 08, 2009, 06:39:55 PM
Hey Tony,

I was looking through the Ogre's Cave website and found a procedure for adjusting the rear calipers. And the good part is that the e-brake doesn't need to be functional.

Here's the link: http://home.comcast.net/~fierocave/brakes2.htm (http://home.comcast.net/~fierocave/brakes2.htm)

We could try that out.

You guys had a tech session and didn't invite us? :( Expecially with Blacktree, aka "waterpump" Willy. Geez guys I'm crushed. I especially miss the drinking beer part? :'(

Specifically, what do you think the Ebrake issue is? I've found on cars that haven't been driven in awhile, or where the Ebrake has been disconnected, the rear caliper Ebrake piston gets a lot of "crap" in it, and has to be disassembled from the caliper and thoroughly cleaned out.

Title: Re: Exoticse Choptop Build
Post by: Blacktree on February 15, 2009, 12:59:52 PM
The Ogre's Cave article mentions that the actuator lever on the caliper should only move about 1/2" before the caliper starts to grab, making it difficult to move the lever any further. When I was working on Tony's brakes, I could flop the lever back and forth through the whole range of movement, with no resistance.

Based on that, I would guess that either the e-brake is WAY out of adjustment, or the rear calipers are defective.

If it's that loose, I wouldn't think it may just be a simple adjustment issue. However, he might try removing the lever (leave the caliper on the car) and see if he can back out the adjuster till there's tension on the piston (right hand/left hand thread depending on the side).

Then reinstall the lever and try to crank it the rest of the way for proper adjustment. If that fails, then almost definately the caliper will have to be disassembled, cleaned and asessed.

If the brakes were low on fluid and one side was already disconnected, it's most probably a problem from the PO.

On the right rear caliper, I removed the bracket and spun the bolt by hand. I could back it out all the way until it bottomed out, and screw it in until the hexagonal part disappeared into the hole.

You guys had a tech session and didn't invite us? :( Expecially with Blacktree, aka "waterpump" Willy. Geez guys I'm crushed. I especially miss the drinking beer part? :'(

Hey Mark,

It was really kind of just an impromptu thing. Mike lives really close to me so i just asked him to stop by one day and check things out.

I definatly welcome as much advice and help as possible. If you are going to be in the area or have some free time, let me know and i would love to have you come by.

I know most of you guys work during the week, and my weekend schedule usually sucks so sometimes it can be a pain trying to hook up.

I am off every Thursday (except next week) and then i am off every other Sunday, otherwise my second day off each week fluctuates.

I really need to get cracking if i plan to get this thing on the road for Daytona, so i repeat, hehehe anytime you have free time or wanna come by just let me know !

You know I was just giving you guys a hard time.

I really enjoy the get togethers and talking Fieros. It's just for me, having the 45 mile drive, unless I really know there's something going on, it's tough to just "drop by".

Maybe when I get old and retired I'll just be tooling around all day and causing havoc with everybody's schedule, but for now I can hardly get my own stuff done.

You better damn well bet we expect to see the Chopper in Daytona. ???

Ok back to health and back to the build !

Rebuilding the wallet and getting the ole motivation going again !  Weather has been a bi**th the past 2 days,.. 90 +  degrees so working on the car has been a problem.

Sucks because i was really motivated. At any rate i was at least able to score some newly rebuilt calipers from a fellow CFF club member at this month's meeting.

Thanks Alex ! He also plans to come over in the next few weeks to help with the install.

INSIDE MOVES

Phase 1- Skinning !

With #4 still tucked away, waiting on a brake job, i decided to work on things that don't require cash, hehehehe.

A couple years ago i acquired a V-8 Archie Dash from a forum member over in Springhill.
The kit was pretty complete from what i could see, and i got it for a virtual steal of a deal !!

The previous owner had the dash semi-installed in a GT that had a norm's flip up nose that i believe now belongs to forum member Jake Dragon. At any rate the previous owner had the dash and other kit pieces covered in some type of tweed material and had done a few various cutouts

Actually did a pretty good job, in covering the dash, it just was not something to my liking or that was going to work for me.

With that in mind it was time to do some Skinning ! My main focus was to get back to the basic fiberglass so i could mock it up and modify to my style.

The key would be to try and get the covering off without doing too much damage to the glass. At first glance things did not look too daunting.

Oh well time to just jump in !

Even though i took my time to make sure nothing got destroyed, things went along fairly easily.

Once i got the center console naked, i decided to give it a sneak preview of it's new home.

Title: Re: Exoticse Choptop Build
Post by: exoticse on May 17, 2009, 12:16:22 AM

The main dash was next,..

Even though it took a little longer, it too came thru unscathed !

The scalps,,..hehehehe

These too came off undamaged, so someone else with a V-8 Archie dash could re-use them if they so chose.

Title: Re: Exoticse Choptop Build
Post by: exoticse on May 17, 2009, 12:22:42 AM
One thing you do notice is the previous owner had made even more cutouts that were not visible from the top due to some type of covering, that was not fiberglass.

(underside view)

(view from the top after removing the skin)

No matter since it can all be reglassed to suit my design.

Both pieces had the yellowish residue from the adhesive used to apply the former skin.

Next up,..more skinning,.. and a special field trip !

It's good to see progress. If you need any help with the fiberglass work, drop me a line.

Oh, and FYI mineral spirits (aka paint thinner) will take care of the adhesive residue. And it won't damage the fiberglass.

Ok i am back on track in terms of working on #4. Have some pics to download, but that will come later.

At any rate, one update i can provide is concerning the lambo doors. When i got them they were great except in one aspect, closing them from a sitting position was very hard !

Opening them from the inside or outside was feather easy,..closing them from the outside was equally as easy, but closing them from the inside required pulling them down first, then getting in and pulling them closed as normal as they first open out, and then up.

Well i can now proudly say that i can now easily pull the doors down and closed from a sitting position inside the car. I don't know if it just took the doors a while to loosen up, or that i just got stronger from practice, but it is now a piece of cake !

The other side is now the issue as i don't sit in the passenger seat, so i am going to have to practice closing it a few times a day to get it loosened up like on the driver's side.  All in all i love the lambo doors, great investment, and definatly a head turner !!

Saved by the Bell,...er the Blacktree.  Had to use a lifeline today,..thanks mike.

Been working on #4 each week, by myself. This week's task was pretty dirt simple right,...jack the car up, remove the tires, and add some air pressure as they were a little low.

Well i did the driver's side first and on the way down the fiero jack got jammed somehow and i had to use the mitsubishi mirage jack to lift it up so i could get the fiero jack out and lower the car.

moved over to the passenger side and with the fiero jack still stuck at the midpoint i used the mirage jack again and it worked pretty well. as a backup i took the halfway stuck up fiero jack also just in case something went wrong with the mirage jack.

well pictures to follow.  :O

#4 still has the crappy stock speakers and at least one of them is bad, so i decided to do the mod i had seen others, like unbound mo (pictured below), on Pennocks do.

i had some fairly new aftermarket speakers i had installed and then removed from my honda civic prior to selling it so these would do for now.

Basically involves tracing the part below, and making an adapter out of  1/8" mdf,  to fit the new round speakers, then just wiring it up.

everything was going good until i realized that i did not have the right size tool to take off the speakers,..arrrgh   ! Off to the parts store.

More frustations !

just as i am about to get it steet legal it decides it suddenly does not want to start.

Talked to some guys at this past CFF meeting and they said fuel or spark.

Being probably the least mechanical guy in the club (hehehe) i decided to do some reseach on PFF.

Some good information. First off the Fuel pump does prime when i turn the key.

Next Question it said to check the tach when you crank the car to see if it moves,..it does but barely.
How much is it supposed to move ?

i don't have a voltage meter, would someone who has one be willing to stop by to help me run a few other tests ? Shoot me a PM if  you can.

Thanks Tony

BTW the car does crank, just doesn't start.

This just happened in the past week, and prior to that ran with no problems.

Title: Re: Exoticse Choptop Build
Post by: Koenig355 on February 12, 2010, 03:41:02 AM
You said It ran perfectly before  and just stopped starting  obviously it can't be much  so you have to establish a sterting point :-
Do you have sparks at the plugs........ pull a plug wire  and insert a screwdriver in the plug cap  while someone cranks it hold the screw driver close to a metal part on the motor you should have a spark jumping from the cap to  to groundor metal part on the motor ......if not  you have no high voltage.

Take the distributor cap off and crank the engine and observe if thr rotor turns ,if it does  the timing chain is good.

Causes ..........module in the didtributor, tach filter, coil also fuses in the fuse box and pull a plug to see if it is fouled with gas and soot.

Fuel...... check  to see if you have fuel pressure at the schrader valve fitting yoy should have  about 44 to 47 psi  or there about,if there is pressure  now you have to determine if the injectors are pulsing or better still spray  some starting  fluid  into the throttle body while cranking it  it should start ,if not then it is an electrical problem hope that helps.

HMM,my original did not post,,on modern cars with electronic Ignition always place a spark plug in the plug wire ,,Do not snap spark directly to block(ground) ..Install a known good spark plug into a plug wire ,ground spark plug firmly to block..observe plug while helper turns engine over to see if there is spark.. If difficulty seeing spark ,,shade plug,lf  there is no spark ,,there is a good chance you knock something loose ,
1..check area where you last played
2.. check coil and distributor connections, first for loose connection(they are obvious)there are clips on top ofconnector that hold the connectors to the coil or distributor they may have broken and the connector is loose..check connections for looseness,,corrosion,,eyeball them..
3.. still no spark remove distributor cap check that rotor spins when engine is turned over
..1000.. the easiest way to check for spark is to hook up an inductive  timing light ,,turn engine  over,, if light flashes,,you have spark and rotor is turning,,You can check this alone,,no helper,, by taping the trigger(or rubber band)  and watching flash..neato jet tip
.

FUEL,,normally if you depress valve and fuel squirts out with vigor,it should fire....fuel injection rarely floods an engine

Post by: uhlanstan on February 12, 2010, 11:56:18 PM
having trouble posting
Big lots normally has starting fluid for under $2,,$2 to $4 bucks at parts store..
you can use a plastic coke bottle drill a small hole in the cap and you use it as as squeeze bottle remove large rubber TBI snorkle and squirt a small amount of gas in TBI then crank engine,, if you have spark it should fire..
You can make your own spark gap tester,, use old known good spark plug,, wrap a length of  bare wire around metal body,,clamp wire firmly with hose clamp,,attach alligator clip to other end of wire and use this as a secure ground clamp ...properway is to drill hole in plug body and solder wire
of course make sure you have good battery ground connection,,of course charge battery for max juice to starter and ignition

Update:

Mike (Blacktree) and myself went over the car today and still we are not getting a start. We were able to determine that the car is getting spark and fuel,..sooooooo wtf ?!??

ECM checked out,  fuses good, cold start injector ok, changed out the ignition coil and it made no difference, Checked the distributor connections for corrosion, yada, yada, yada.

Could this be a timing issue ?? Again the car cranks but no start. Frustrated ! :(

Tony:

Did you check that the distributor rotor was actully turning? (Timing chain).

If that checked OK, did you re establish the timing position, #1 cylinder.

If you've verified spark and fuel (I'm giving you guys benefit of the doubt for how you established that), the car would start, even with a bad ECM, in open loop.

If the ECM is truly shot, you should get a code 51 (bad prom), no code 12 (when you jumper into diagnostic mode), or initially no check engine light when you key on but don't start.

when i said the ECM checked out, i meant it was OK. We used a scan tool and the car was throwing no codes.

We did not readjust the timing as i did not have a breaker bar.

Just to clarify, I hooked up a timing light while Tony cranked the engine, and it flashed as normal. I also pulled a few spark plugs, and they had a little bit of gasoline on them (after trying to start the engine several times).

I also checked the IAC passage, to make sure it wasn't clogged. And I swapped in a known good ignition coil, to rule out weak spark. I also looked into the valve cover while Tony cranked the engine, to make sure the valvetrain was working. Plus, the ECM flashed the usual code 12 (no other codes) when put in diagnostic mode.

Some things we did not do:

-- Didn't swap out the ignition module, because I figured if it was bad, there would be no spark
-- Didn't verify timing, due to lack of tools (I'm wondering if the timing chain skipped a few teeth)
-- Didn't check for spark at every spark plug, just cylinder #1

Funny he should have pictures of the Audio Zone store. We were looking into buying it a few months back but decided against it at the last moment. Now the owner has taken it off the market. I would have loved to had bought it, as it is close to my home, but there are some things that made us leery of buying it.

Nice !

Any info on your project, are you staying auto ?
Are you going to be doing anything to the eng ? for more performance.
What year is the eng ? and from what car ?

Have fun collecting parts  :)

Series 2 3800sc from a 2000 bonneville ssei with 32 k milles.

Comes with a 4t65e automatic transmission from a 2000 grand prix gtp with 50 k miles.
getting a brand new set of fuel injectors (still in the box), along with a set of low mount tranny and engine mount adapters from fiero addiction.

Linc i could be totally wrong but i thought i read somewhere that all or most of the original donor series 2 3800sc cars were automatics and that kind of surprised me.

Do most of the fiero guys convert them to manuals ? The thought of it being automatic seems strange to me, i kinda assumed most guys wanted manual ?

Harry's and Dave's are both stick right ?  Yeah i have been looking at the list of parts needed and it is definatly going to be a process !

This is going to however knock me out of bringing it to Daytona. Not enough funds now to insure, get florida registration and all that in time for the show. Needed to move on the engine or lose out.

Hey Tony
I am happy for you, the mileage on the eng is great.
All the SC eng in the states where auto.

Harry's car is auto.
The good thing about the auto trans is that  you won't have to worry about breaking the trany.

With the manual trans, is more expensive since you have to get more parts, ex
Machined flywheel, clutch, preasure plate, to bearing, not to mention the convertion to manual transmission.

Why are you getting new injectors ?
Are you going to mod for more boost ?

Talk to you later.

Title: Re: Exoticse Choptop Build
Post by: exoticse on March 17, 2010, 03:17:29 PM

The previous owner purchased the new fuel injectors and is throwing them in.

Ok i feel better about the automatic then, knowing that is what Harry has.

i need to do some more research on performance upgrades in regards to the swap. I am really not interested in racing it at the track, but i would like for it to have a nice pop, just don't want to get too crazy.

The engine is fast enough as it is dropped into a fiero, but if the upgrades are cheap i might consider a few.

pulled the stock speakers (toast) and in the process of installing some fairly new speakers i had in my old daily driver. They are pretty generic but are an upgrade over the old stock ones.

These will be upgraded later but will do for now. I am in the process of making an adapter out of mdf. i am using a templete from the original fiero stock speaker screen to get it done

Mike (Blacktree) dropped by today to loan me his engine stand that i will use for my 3800sc engine.

While he was here i asked him to help me with a wiring issue. i was wiring in some new speakers, but could not find the wires for the driver's side dash speakers.

Turns out when someone, at some point,  had removed and reinstalled the dash they had tucked them away in such a manner that they were inaccessible without pulling out the dash a bit.

Made me feel a bit better to know that i was not going crazy when i could not find the wiring for that side.
We pulled the dash slightly got the wiring out and temporarily rigged up the speakers, which worked fine.

Tommorow i plan to pick up a solder gun to finish up the job.

Thanks again Mike.

Engine bay cleaned up and hit with a fresh coat of chassis black paint. The old battery tray also removed and the area cleaned up.

I like it. I might be tempted to tweak it so the front edge of the scoop has a V-shape, like the front edge of the hood. But aside from that, I think it looks cool.

News from Dean !

Update on the car today we did a bit more work on the motor. we got the bolts to install the trans all the way as well as a lot of other parts that did not come with the setup.
Motor mounts, fuel rails, tenisoners, coil mounts, AC compressor, trans tail shaft mount, alt. and much more. I ordered a low mount alt. set up that I will be getting soon.
also the headers should be back from the coater some time next week. I had them coated using a new color that will look great and will not look like others out their, I will post pic's once I get them back.
we also installed the new injectors and a stock fuel rail but we did rebend the fuel rail so the fuel lines are going the way they should. we will be droping the fuel tank soon to install the new fuel pump soon and once I get the headers back we will be installing the motor for the last time. the wires will be routed in a way that will hide most of them.
more to come...
D.

I can't tell from the pictures... but did he install the new aluminum intake manifold gaskets?

Even if it only had 5 miles on the old plastic ones, replace them. When the plastic gets brittle they fail and coolant goes straight into your oil.

Are you putting the PCM behind the seat or something. That's a lot of wire there if you're planning on keeping the pocket stock inside the center console.

The dyno max turbo is good for the buick V6,,it should be mounted as far from the Y pipe as possible..
this muffler is very quiet for a performance muffler,, the design has been tweeted for the past 20 years
if you want loud this is not for you, makes the car sound like a muffled V8 at Idle .reasonable price

there are many dyno test done on this muffler on the internet.. the test are conducted usin Chevy & ford V8s of course,,use the 14 inch model,,no muffler is an easy fit,,
the summit mufflers are good also ,,reasonable price
The summit mufflers & the dyno are both made  by walker I think
you can use the stock mount springs by welding brackets on the muffler or using clamps with holes drilled in them
Just google
Titanralk.com flow chart for a few mufflers
Carcraft magazine muffler comparison

Okay time to update things.

First Dean finished all the detail work on the motor and the engine bay, which included installing a new type of sound dead pad that is used in Abrams Tanks !!

Next it was time to put her in for the final and last time, and to hook up all the wires and hoses.

During this process Dean test fit the new custom axles, then pulled them out to have them packed and booted.  Next up he fabbed up a custom dogbone, and intake tube, and installed the plug wires.

we are waiting on some connectors to finish that up and an exhaust setup to come in.
Also on the way the Archie battery box tray, and some rodney dickman trunk struts.

Hehe nooooot quite.

It is not getting paint yet, just some primer to make it presentable and all one color. I am still definatly doing the widebody so it makes no sense to paint it now.

Dean now makes all the 3800 mounts so it no longer necessary to sit around waiting for others to answer emails or make a production run. Dean is the man.

It is time for you to get in gear though hehehe (just kidding). I think we are all anxious to see your baby breaking necks all over Orlando !

No J/K, you are right. It's been sitting out for the last two days outside a friend's house. Making space in the garage to prepare to drop the engine (since now I have a bunch of free time... unemployed :) ). Need to change the seals and the the mounts that I'm not happy with. Latest update from whodeanie:

" we got the car done yesterday and took it out on it's first drive. it still needs to be tuned, the motor runs great but it has a few codes we need to clear.
the trans is stuck in limp mode until the tune is done as well but it runs and drives now. we will be tuning it this next week and see about getting a few trips up and down the road.
I was also able to get the tips installed as well.
I will keep you posted with more soon. "

You had to remove your torsion springs Tony? Gonna be adding gas struts to hold up the deck?

It's not as easy to impress the ladies when you can't get your deck to stay up by itself...

Just sayin'

Hint: check PFF

BTW, I also gave Tony some old body parts off the Freak. I'm not going to go into detail, in case he wants to keep it under wraps. But I will say that if Tony uses the parts I gave him, his Fiero will be one of VERY few that have this particular feature.

Been in Atlanta all week visiting the in-laws, so while i was here i took it as a great opportunity to go see Dean and map out the remaining modifications on #4.

Arriving at Dean's place in Woodstock.

The shop was abuzz with work. Dean and his team were just finishing up repairing a badly damaged GT who decided to tangle with the rear of a jaguar.

I have to admit his shop was pretty large and impressive.

There were engine swaps in progress, Fieros on lifts,... you name it.

That was just one half of the building, the other side well,.....can you say CANDY STORE !?!   :O :O

There were choptops and lambos everywhere !

4 lambos and 6 choptops in all !! Oh yeah there also was probably 8 or 9 other projects going on as well.

Brought my RX-8 mirrors up for whodeanie to install (just like the one's below on Dave's car)

I gotta tell you these are some of the baddest mirrors for a fiero that i have seen, no comparison when you put them next to the stock ones.

One of the modifications i had been unsure of was the addition of a custom hood scoop i had picked up a few months back.

I am really, really not a hood scoop guy, but i gotta admit, in person, this one looks pretty awesome, so now it is a go !

Dean also showed me the battery relocation and cranked it up so i could hear her roar.

latest construction pics of #4   :D

Some of the changes may not be obvious so i will point out what has been changed so far.

First we started off with the standard Mad Arch widebody kit.  The original plan was to pull in the rear pillars to create a shelf to go along with the hips, but Dean as crafty as he is, came up with another unique idea.

We decided to add his new widebody look hips on top of the mad Arch kit, which resulted in a wide hip with a shelf, simlair to the look Car-lo had before he decided to tear his car apart and redo it.

Dean also cleaned up the rear of the Mad Arch kit where it meets the rear lights. A lot of people complained that, that portion of the kit look unfinished, so he finished it off better.

The hood scoop is obvious, and is currently being finished.

Look for several other body tweeks along the way including RX-8 side mirrors, side and rear markers, a rear diffuser, camaro bowtie winglettes, audi style LED running lights, rear decklid treatment, and some customization to the new fiberglass nose.

Todays update from Dean:

I did some more work on your car over the last few days. I got the hips glassed on and am now working them to get the shape i want.
I will get some more pics this week. yesterday I was walking up behind it and I have to say it looks wicked from the back.  :D  Once I get the hips done I will play with the wing.

I always thought Archie missed the boat when it came to the end corners on his widebody kit. It's a good thing you are getting this area finished like it should have been. I can't wait to see your car when it is finished. :D

Agreed.
The way Archie left the ends was almost the same as Alex left his on the original widebody.
Not to take anything away from Arch, but It always seemed "unfinished' or a compromise to ME.
KUDOS to Tony and Dean for giving that item and the top of the rear fenders a much more completed and professional look. As I posted on PFF.....BRILLIANT!!  :D

Actually, the original design was ment to have a vent in the area on #015 chotop. The original design was recopied, but for the most part most MadArch owners tend to glass in this area. On V8Archie's YouTube video of #013 he mentions that you can cut open this area. Another side not is that most MadArch widebody owners opt of in using the higher door caps. Granted, the swing upward option allows for a modifed sail window.

It just seems like so many of them look like the same chop, with wide body, with scoops, with extra lights... etc...
I didn't have an actual image in my head of what I was expecting. This is just more than I was expecting.

This still says"Fiero" to me but with the angled hips, clean, flowing cuts at the back wheel, not to mention the enclosed hatch over the engine. Plus it looks like it's about done. So when's it coming home? And will you be driving it?

Anthony, we seriously need to see wheels on #004!  :P Wheels can either make or break a car. You can have the baddest body modifications on a Fiero (widebody, mirrors, vents, headlights, ect), but without a set of nice wheels the body mods will be lost. It's the only way to determine which way to go with the body. Remember: "Wheels first. Tweak last." ;)

Wheels first were not an option in this case, as the widebody modification came as an unexpected opportunity that i had to sieze or lose out.

Talked with Dean yesterday and his shop is basically slammed with engine swaps !  8-9 3800SC engine swaps in the works to be exact, with about a 2.5 week turnaround means a lot of $$$ and a bit of focus in that direction.

With that being said #4 and all the other cars requiring bodywork are being done on the weekends during Dean's usual days off.

That is why progress has been kind of slow lately. No biggie. Daytona is the big goal so i am all good.

Anything?

Hows your wife doing?

A long time friend of mine just had twins (girls) and made me their GF  :D - They were preemies and under 4lbs so they had to stay in the hospital until they busted that 4lb threshold - They are home now and doing great

I wish you two (soon to be three) the very best!

Hey pappy,

Thanks ! Wife is doing absolutely great, other than having a horrible time sleeping at night (just can't get comfortable). Everything else is right on schedule.

Updates you say ??

Ok.

camaro bowtie wing installed
Rx-8 side mirrors installed
mini cooper side markers installed
Rear mazda reflectors installed

up next:

Nose modifications and installation of DRL, turn signals, and fog lights. Still playing around where to place everything and how much to widen things out.

That is all for phase 1 before number 4 comes home.

Next fall look for decklid mods, rear bumper lowering and design tweeking, custom dash and interior, and brake and suspension upgrade.

Taking measurements and trying to get the whole wheel thing worked out.

Testing out Dean's wheels on my car.

They don't work because the wheels were made for an 88 and they are hitting the strut mount.

This experiment was done prior to the installation of rear coilovers that are currently being installed.

The car has come a looooooooong way, but this adventure is still not over (is it ever ??).

For the show It will be in primer and sporting tiny 17' wheels (Dean said they look like doughnuts now that the car is a widebody) hehehe.

My new wheels 19 x 9 and 20 x 11 will not be ready for the show. Meanwhile i can't justify spending money (for one day - the show) on temporary wheels that i won't really need while i am waiting on the big boys,,,,,,,, no matter how silly it looks.

Some guys might care about that, but sorry i am just not one of them. I look at the big picture and not the short term.

i am not trying to win any awards or impress anybody, just sharing the progress on my ride and showing off Dean's skills on the bodywork and engine install.

Now when i get my real wheels, and do a couple other tweeks,....theeeeen it will be GAME ON !!

New HT Coilovers now in.

Dean had the car up on the lift today updating some wiring, wiring up the drl and turn signals, tuning the car and doing some last tweeks to the rear bumper.

a tiny bit of bodywork is left on the doors and side rockers and then all is good to go.

Just got back from the show and Wow !  :D

The car is far from being a show car, but man it looks good !  A lot better than the pictures could ever show.
I was pleased and impressed.

Still got " A LOT" , did i mention " A LOT" to improve and work on, but it is a very nice base to start from.

I am excited to get going.

Dean is the man !

So many wonderful body mods, loved seeing the progress Dean made on her and very happy you have her back home so you can finish her off the way you want her. Keep working on her when life lets you and don't forget to keep her in good running condition.  :D

Mike,

I would love to, cause i wanted you to look it over, but unfortunately i have to work. I switched my day off so i could be home sunday for the dropoff.

I probably will also miss the next one too, because that is the time the wife is scheduled to deliver !  :O

From there i will be in a race for the next one as i need to replace the headlight motors so i can drive at night.  i plan to upgrade to the 88 setup so i am looking up the process as we speak.

You are more than welcome to come by the house and see it, if you don't want to wait until then. Just let me know.

I was a The meeting and did not hear anyone " picking apart or kicking your car around "

I spoke to 2 people very briefly about your car.
One of the persons even said that he would be willing to try to help you out.

I hope that you understand that not everyone,
is going to like the modifications that you had done.

I know for a fact that what I am doing to my car,
is not going to be liked by some
but that is OK

I hope to see you n your ride in the future meetings  :)

Just passing through as usual and saw this......guys will be guys and don't feel bad you are not the first and certainly not be the last ,this is an everyday thing so just live with it.In life you have to live with it and and as long as you are happy with your car that is all that counts.

Hypocracy will always be around and the car hobby is no different so just  tuff up and not be a quitter because of a few individuals    with hidden agendas........jump in your car turn the stereo up  and listen to Bob Marley's "Mix up Mix up" :TY: cause this is what this is.

Yep what Koenig said, - Guys will be guys

I'll say this, sometimes an overheard conversation can also be misunderstood or quoted out of context

Your car at this time is a rolling work in progress so I'm sure most of us know this

You should ask them (those who picked it apart) to keep you in the loop so you can address the issues :)

I've been told by some that peeps have issues with things i do to my ride - I evaluate it for substance if it's legit i accept it and move on, if it's a matter of my taste then you know what I say...

Edit to remove foul language

But in a nice respectful way, hehe

I apologize for blowing up guys, as i found out what really happened and it was " JUST AS I SUSPECTED" and i will leave it at that.

No need to stir the drama drink any further. Done.

It was never a style issue. I could care less, (did i mention care less ??)  if anybody likes or disliked the modifications i had done lol, that would be their problem.  Simply don't do it to your car and move on.

It just bugged me that some people were evaluating the car, concours d'elegance style,  as if it was even remotely finished, as far as what i plan to do, and acted as if i was rushing off to paint next week.

That is when the absurdity of it all took me from anger to laughter.

You can love it, hate it (lol again that is your problem), or say whatever you want about it, but i am very happy so that is all that matters to me.

Deuces,... aka peace out.

Hell son, i'll keep saying the same thing i have for a couple years now. i don't care how much more work you think it needs, the chop and lambo doors make it just plain sexy and now you've added brazilian girl hips and sweet driving/blinker lights to the front. Does it need a good bit of finishing body smoothing? Sure, but damn i'm envious, just drive it and enjoy all the jaws dropping. Oh and bring it to meetings.  :)

Yes, plz bring it to club meetings!

If you're worried about the fit & finish on the body, just park next to mine, and yours will insta-magically look 10x better! At least your car has only one color of primer. ;)

 ;)

A few build thread comments today from Dean:

" everyone loved the car at the show but the biggest coment I got was what was up with the primer texture. so just to clear things up a bit,
the primer was roll primed, yes put on with a roller, because we have no booth I can not spray it and most body shops here now do this as well for several reaasons. one it saves time, less mess, thicker coat. I knew that it would be some time before Tony would be ready for paint and this way all he has to do is sand the primer and go. because of the texture it works as a guid coat as well.
I thought the same thing when I first saw this being done but now I get it.
D. "

I have to admit, I was a little skeptical of the roll-on primer too. But after some thought, I think it makes good sense.

Finished the install of my RX-8 mirrors !

Dean did not get the chance to fully complete the install before he dropped the car off at the Show, so i finally got off my duff and decided to do something about it.

Blacktree stopped by and helped out big time, thanks mike !
It just required drilling some holes and dropping in some screws to the already installed mirror/door plates.

Came out pretty decent, with the passenger side nearly perfect, but the driver's side is going to need some tweeking. Not happy with the way the plate and the mirror mesh on the one side. Going to require some welding, some trimming, and maybe a little reconstruction.

Before the driver's mirror was just held onto the backing plate by a piece of blue tape hehehe.

Like i said Dean ran out of time before the show, so no big deal, but the driver side looks like it got less love than the other side.

It looks ok from a distance, but the final product is just not as precise and clean as the other side.

I am also going to have to do some sort of treatment to the metal plates as their is a little surface rust occurring.

Any recommendations to treat the exposed metal ?? I will probably paint the bases too at some point.

Antonio,
Are the plates removable?

To treat bare metal I recommend Rust-Oelum rust reformer then paint with an enamel

But powder coating would be awesome - We should have a club powder coater

Is Dean going to send you the parts that didn't get installed?

Also if you have exposed metal that you can't paint - Mechanical or moving parts I use T-9 Boeshield

I think the gray looks pretty cool too

I was hoping so, but he has so much on his plate trying to get reorganized, finding my stuff amidst the piles of stuff he just moved is kind of unrealistic at this moment, so i just went and got the stuff that i needed, no big deal.

Ron Smigla had the missing parts, that were actually better than the ones i had so i am happy. It is all good.

yeah eli,...it has been a loooooong slumber hehehe.

Thanks rpo, but i wish i could have done more to support the show, but a lot of the planning and activities took place on the weekend and that just does not jive with my work.

Some people have asked why i never really drive the car,..........

It's akin to walking around with highwater pants IMO.  :O

Totally goofy and silly looking and it basically robs all the coolness of the widebody and choptop.

i could just buy average or lesser wheels and call it a day, but i know what i want and can't bring myself to just settle, sorry if some just can't understand that.

I totally expected to have the new wheels waaaaay before now, but things happened and the family always takes priority for me.

No promises, but things are starting to look up.

So "when" will we actually see this car being driven?

Not pushing, I have plenty of my own project past due, just wondering?!

Marc

When i get my wheels back.

Lots more going on, but it is a slow process dictated by time and money.

Among the goings on new rear bumper, quarterwindow, and decklid designs, wheels, and some minor cleanup of a couple of body issues.

I have been wanting to do a custom rear bumper and have been banging my head over what design to go with,,,,well finally i decided to stop trying to reinvent the wheel and go with what i have.

This piece originally belonged to Blacktree, who glassed the lower half onto an original fiero bumper. Fearing it would eventually split, if i remember correctly,  he made a fiberglass copy and basically was tossing this in the trash !.

i couldn't stand to see such a nice piece go to waste so even though i had no immediate plans for it , i asked if i could have it and he said sure why not,

Mike is one of the coolest guys i have met in the fiero world,..very knowledgeable, talented, and always willing to help. Thanks again Mike.

My plans are to tweek this big time, but basically i will be using just the lower half as a starting point and adding it to my existing bumper, but with some cool and very distinct changes.

Stay tuned.

Tony, have you read my comments in your PFF thread? If not, please do so.

Also, heat shields for the exhaust would be a good idea. I didn't use heat shields when the diffuser was on my car, because the exhaust was cut short (so the exhaust pipes wouldn't interfere with airflow thru the diffuser).

BTW, you'll also need to chop out the bottom 2-3" of the trunk to make room for the diffuser.

Got going on #4 today with the help of Blacktree (Mike). First off we did some measurments for the widening of the HRE wheels and got that squared away.

Next we went over some fiberglass body stuff that needs cleaned up to bring the car up to snuff IMO. We hosed down and cleaned the engine and tried to find the source of some mysterious smoke coming from the back of the engine compartment. Very, very light, can barely see it, but still something that concerns me nonetheless.

We checked various things to make sure they were not contacting the exhaust but could find nothing. At some point i want to have a couple of the other engine gurus from the club come over and check it out to make sure everything is OK.

One of the main things i wanted mike to look at was the rear bumper and he had some very good news. Most of the portion i wanted to use is all fiberglass !! In fact the cutout line where the glass meets the old bumper is perfect for what i need, so stay tuned !

It is going to take some tweeking so i don't have to fool with chopping out part of the bottom of my trunk, but i think i have an idea of what to do.

Now as far as the wheels go, next up HRE ! Need to get ahold of them on Monday to finalize my service order and get things popping ! May have to do the wheels in pairs but i am gonna get it done.

Got the wheels back from HRE and wow !!  :O :O :O

Those boys suuuure know what they heck they are doing. They look 100% brand new.

19 x 10.5 (4.5" lips)

Those who came to the most recent club meeting got to see them in person.

Once the car is painted (yeah right) it will look very similar in color scheme to the car below.

Red paint, black centers, and a polished lip just to add some more pop !

Sadly i doubt i will be able to make "ANY " more progress for the next year (2014) as i just got some really bad news (money drain) that just blew my household budget right out of the water for the next 12 months.

What lies hither ??

Anybody know what lies beneath this cap on the fronts for the fiero wheels ?? does the cover need to be there for some reason or just cosmetic ??

is it the same as the rear (below) ?

i hope so then it is just of matter of shaving them down about 1/2 inch to get my center caps to fit on my new wheels.

Sorry pics were taken before the wheels were refinished and new center caps arrived.

Those are the ends of the spindle and yes you can cut them down, make sure the nut is on before you do any cutting........have fun.

Title: Re: Exoticse Choptop Build
Post by: Blacktree on April 21, 2014, 01:04:46 AM
The front wheel bearings (and a lot of grease) are in there too. So IMO it would be a good idea to remove the bearings and hubs before you start cutting/grinding on the spindles. You don't want metal shavings getting into the wheel bearings.

Pontiac Fiero GT Fastback LED Tail lights (Sequential) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0mPinxQ0EAI#ws)

The kit features full LED lights that act as your parking/brake/turn signal lights. You retain your stock outer lenses and housings so that fit and finish is as good as stock. The inner lenses are retained and LED panels are placed behind them. It keeps everything looking stock until you turn your lights on!

These LED tail lights also feature a sequencing turn signal that is driven by a plug and play controller board. The control board comes fully assembled and is ready to use!

Tires vary  on several things that you need to take into consideration before getting them, suspension set up, spring rate, driving style and $$$.What  makes the difference  are all the above need to be addressed  to obtain the right compound and side wall stiffness other you will ne buying a tire that will not meet your needs other than looks

Well you might as well throw sidewall stiffness out of your equation... You don't need no stinking sidewalls with those huge wheels...

Sorry guys, been a bit tied up juggling family and work.

2014 has really been a wash for me (yeah i know, what's new). Too many things going on to really devote any time or resources at all to the car.

It actually got so frustrating that i decided to temporarily just walk away and take some time off from the project. it has really helped.

The self imposed pressure to get it done has lifted and i am going to stop trying to swallow the whale, and chip away bite by bite.

i plan to start driving it and bringing it to meetings in  early 2015, when things slow down. Won't happen this year as right now i am just too busy with work and kids to get her ready.
